Hypomyces armeniacus Tul., Ann. Sci. Nat. Bot., Ser. IV, 13: 12, 1860. Anamorph: Cladobotryum verticillatum (Link) Hughes, Can. J. Bot. 36: 750, 1958. Teleomorph in nature: Subiculum coral(No.44) covering a part or entire surface of host hymenium; hy,enial hyphae (4-)6-11ƒÊm in width, parenchymatous, septate, thick-walled, and KOH (-). Perithecia apricot (No.47), pyriform to obpyriform, (251-) 284-324(-365) x 243-259 (-365) ƒÊm, born in groups half-immersed in the mycelia; papilla conical, 122-138 (-170) x (122-) 138-162 (-203) ƒÊm. Asci cylindrical, (148-)208-216(-232) ~ 2.0-2.5(-3.0) ƒÊmC, 8-spored, with a stalk 12-88ƒÊm long, forming a pore at the slightly thick-walled apex, 4.0-8.0 ƒÊm in long. Ascospores hyaline, fusiform, always equally two-celled, (24.0-)34.0-36.0(-40.0) ~ (5.5-)6.5-7.0(-8.5) ƒÊm, verrucose with prominent warts, apiculate at both ends; apiculi 2.0-4.5(-5.5) ƒÊm long. Characteristics in cultures: Colonies on MA grow rapidly to reach 90 mm in diam. after 7 days at 25oC, floccose, white(No.7); odorless to moldy, reverse hyaline or clay pink (No.30) to clay buff (No.32). Hyphae hyaline, (2.0-) 4.0-6.0(-10.0) ƒÊm wide, septate, thin-walled. Conidiophores born from aerial hyphae, semi-macronematous, septate, slightly thick-walled, irregularly branched several times, (4.0-) 6.0-11.0 ƒÊm, bearing conidiogenous cells at the apex. Conidiogenous cells born at the apex or laterally as a well-developed single to verticil of 3-4 on the conidiophores, hyaline, 48.0-52.0(-100) x (3.5-) 4.0-4.5 (-6.0) ƒÊm, lanceolate, gradually tapering into the narrow apex of (0.5)1.5-2.0 (-4.0) ƒÊm in width. Conidia solitary, hyaline, aseptate, subglobose to broadly ellipsoidal, thin-walled, smooth, (10.0-)14.0-16.0(-22.0) ~ (7.5-)8.0-10.0(-12.0) ƒÊm. Chlamydospores produced in chains laterally on the substrate hyphae or apically at the apex of the branches, buff (No.10), with minute warts, subglobose to broadly ellipsoidal, (12.0-)22.0-24.0(-36.0) ƒÊm in width.
